What is Yoga Therapy?

"Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga." [IAYT, July 2012].

Yoga Therapy is a complementary therapy working with the individual to improve health and wellbeing, that can work alongside any current treatment/regimes. A personalised practice/program is designed working with the individual, to address the concern on many levels; to ease, reduce, or manage symptoms that cause suffering - to improve function.

Yoga tradition sees humans as multidimensional systems. According to Yoga we are made up of five energetic layers/sheaths, or Koshas. They include all aspects of the physical body, breath, mind, emotions and spirit. They exist together and cannot be separated.

The practice of Yoga include asana, pranayama, meditation, mantra, chanting, mudra, ritual and lifestyle.

In a Yoga Therapy consultation, health and lifestyle information will be taken, and often focus on specific symptoms that are concerning the student. Conditions that students seek assistance for may range from fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, arthritis, insomnia, high blood pressure, depression/anxiety. And stress management. The goals of Yoga Therapy are discussed and clarified. The physical assessment includes observation, palpation (with consent), range of movement, strength, balance, dosha balance, breathing and pranayama.

Practices are taught and practiced in the first session and a follow up session within a week or two is advised. At the second session, the program is discussed and reviewed and any modifications made. A third session is encouraged to review and to progress the practices if needed.
